Thomas David served in the Civil War as a private for the Confederacy in Hamilton's Company of Shaw's Tennessee Cavalry which was also known as the 4th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment.  Hamilton's Company was organized in Jackson County, Tennessee on December 21, 1861 primarily to provide local defense of the border counties lying along the Tennessee line.  They were later moved into general service and saw action at Chickamauga as well as several other campaigns.³²

He married Mary Ethel Mangrum on 28 Feb 1867 in Overton Co., TN.  She was Born 9 Oct 1850 in Overton Co., TN and Died 3 Jan 1920 in Overton Co., TN.  She is buried in Mt. Gilead Cem., Overton Co., TN.¹⁰⁶   Their Children:

  James Garfield raised his family on the John S. Masters farm, which was known in 1989 as the Long farm.  This area is a few hundred yards West of Mt. Gilead Church, Across the blacktop road near the basement home of Cleo Long.  When the old Masters home burned in 1913, Garfield and Ollie lived in the local community until about 1922 when they moved to Dawson, Georgia.

• x.  William Hilary Masters - Born 16 Feb 1885 in Overton Co., TN and Died 17 Dec 1914 in Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN. He was a Federal Revenue Agent and was shot down on Broad & Cedar Street in Cookeville, TN on 14 Dec 1914.  He was killed by Alfred Smith over an argument concerning a load of stove wood.

  He married Maude Etta Apple, daughter of William Apple on Nov 1908 in Putnam Co., TN.  She was Born 1 Aug 1891.¹⁹⁷   Their Children were:  John Leslie,²⁶ William Monroe¹⁹⁷ and Edward D. Masters.³⁰

When Isaac Bird came North in 1867 (age 18) he never told a soul that he had enlisted with the South in the Civil War at age 12 1/2.  When his grandson, Dale Rayburn, became a young man he was told - It was a well kept family secret for many years.  Isaac Bird Masters was with Shaw's Battalion of Mounted Infantrymen under Oliver Hamilton.⁴
